The SUMMIT Research Group at the National University of Singapore (NUS) is interested in developing sustainable, robust, and multifunctional metamaterial systems to solve global challenges. Our research takes an interdisciplinary approach that bridges materials science, mechanics, and advanced manufacturing, combining materials innovation with mechanics-driven design to create multifunctional systems that retain high performance under extreme conditions. These efforts span the full innovation pipeline, from AI-driven metamaterial design exploiting fundamental mechanics and materials science, to scalable fabrication, multiscale testing, and integration into functional systems.
James will join the National University of Singapore (NUS) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) under the NUS Presidential Young Professorship (PYP) in May 2026.
James recognized in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list 2025 (Healthcare & Science category).
Our work "Double-network-inspired mechanical metamaterials" is featured on the front cover of Nature Materials.
Our work "Exploiting multiscale dynamic toughening in multicomponent alloy metamaterials for extreme impact mitigation" is featured on the front cover of Science Advances.
